  • Fairlawn NJ Coming Out Ahead and Having Fun

The rain was falling and the second inning just kept going and going Wednesday. Fair Lawn coach Sue Benjamin couldn’t have been happier.

Angie Colon and her Fair Lawn teammates were hitting the ball all over the park against Demarest.

The Cutters kept getting hits and circling the bases. Angie Colon drove in a couple of runs and Chelsea Benjamin added a two-run double.

When the top of the inning was finally done, Fair Lawn had scored 11 runs and held a 13-1 lead in what would become a 14-7 victory over Demarest. The Cutters had 15 hits and five stolen bases in the game against a team that was one of the NBIL’s best last season.

“We had some serious pregame jitters playing Demarest. They beat us twice last year. I know they lost some players, but [Keith Johnson] is a good coach and they have a strong program,” coach Benjamin said.

“It was a great way to start. We’re feeling confident. We have a lot of good athletes on the field. I’m thinking this is going to be a strong year for us.”

That’s in large part because the Cutters are coming of age. The team brought back eight starters, seven of whom are juniors.

Fair Lawn may have absorbed some defeats in the NBIL last season, but this season it seems like it’s the Cutters’ turn to be on the other side.

Expect Fair Lawn to be an aggressive team. The Cutters have several players with outstanding speed and Benjamin plans to have them put pressure on opposing defenses.

Even her first baseman is fast. Sara Pace was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases against Demarest. Leadoff hitter Christina Danko, one of the few seniors on the team, went 3-for-4 and sparked the offense.

“I said to the girls, ‘Remember where we were last year at Demarest.’ They didn’t mercy us, but they spanked us pretty good. We left there with our heads down,” Sue Benjamin said. “This time, we walked out of there feeling great. There’s a lot of anticipation this year.”

    DOWNTOWN EMERSON PLANS LOOKING UP

    Article from NorthJersey.com

EMERSON, NJ  — A plan to make over the borough’s downtown continues to steam ahead.Last week, a fourth developer gained council approval to apply to the Planning Board for permission to build a structure downtown. The council also chose an engineering firm to study and make plans for changes to Kinderkamack Road. The Puddingstone Group, a developer based in North Haledon, wants to build a mixed-use building of retail stores, including a possible convenience store, and two stories of apartments on an Ackerman Avenue lot.

The company is also trying to buy and redevelop a strip mall nearby, said Mayor Louis Lamatina.

The council has hired its own borough engineer, Maser Consulting, to survey and make plans to reconfigure a congested intersection at Kinderkamack Road that officials say is key to the success of redevelopment.

Maser was one of nine companies to submit a proposal, and estimated their services would cost $47,150. Their estimate was the second-lowest by $1,150 among the companies that submitted offers. The highest estimate was $229,000.

Because the contract covers professional services, the borough is not obligated to choose the lowest bidder.

Councilman Steven Bair, who voiced concerns earlier this year about Maser’s billing practices on a separate project to improve drainage at Hillman Field, said he had faith in the firm’s traffic engineer and voted in favor of hiring the company.
